Chiefly the papers of Richard Hardaway Meade of Richmond, Va., including correspondence, accounts and miscellaneous financial and legal papers. Also included are family correspondence and an account book of his wife, Jane Catherine (Fontaine) Meade, and miscellaneous papers of their respective parents, and their children. Of particular interest is the letter, 1874, from Maria Louisa (Shackelford) Fontaine concerning her raising of her children at "Beaverdam," Hanover County. Also of interest are scattered personal correspondence of Lila Hardaway (Meade) Valentine, Richmond reformer, educator, and suffragist; and three letters from an African-American servant announcing her departure from service to marry and her later return.
